Poland is a country which is widely admired for its rich history and culture. You will have a chance to discover various examples of Polish cultural heritage, both the famous ones and those which are less well-known. Anyone who travels around Poland is bound to be enchanted by magnificent views and numerous monuments.
Every historical period produces its own specific elements of culture. Historic buildings which can be found in Poland encompass ruins of mediaeval castles, renaissance, baroque and classical palaces, historic city centres, churches, monasteries and various commemorative monuments. Many of these sites were honoured by being put on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Places which should be paid special attention to are: Auschwitz-Birkenau, Krakow’s historic Old Town and the salt mine of Wieliczka.
In Krakow itself you can find as many as 30 museums, the newest operates underground, beneath the Main Square. This vibrant city, often named the Polish “cultural capital,” also hosts many cultural events of international renown. In the year 2000 it was honored with the title of the European Capital of Culture.
Another evidence of the richness of Polish culture is to be found in the works of Polish writers, poets and composers collected in the numerous museums as well as in the places with strong connections to those famous people.
