The town of Kazimierz was established in the 14h century in the vicinity of Krakow. At the end of the 15th century, as commanded by king John I Albert, the town became home to a large, self-ruling Jewish community and a cultural hub for the Polish Jews. During the Nazi occupation, the Jews were moved to a ghetto in Podgórze.
Plac Wolnica, the square at the heart of Kazimierz, is dominated by a Town Hall from the 15th century, housing the Ethnographic Museum. Nearby, you will find a gothic church of Corpus Christi with a magnificent interior.
Instances of Jewish culture can be found in the extant synagogues: The Old Synagogue (the oldest synagogue in Poland), currently operating as a museum, the Remuh Synagogue, still active as a place of worship and the Remuh cementary, the High Synagogue, Wolf Popper Synagogue, Izaak Synagogue, the New Synagogue and the Tempel Synagogue.
Today Kazimierz is the second most favourite destination of tourists visiting Krakow. The unique atmosphere of this place can be felt especially at night. It is well-worth coming here after sundset to walk along the narrow streets and come to Plac Nowy, the centre of Kazimierz's nightlife. Myriads of original pubs and atmospheric beer gardens attract Krakow's locals as well as tourists.
Trips can be combined. Before or after visiting Kazimierz, we suggest a tour of Wawel. On the way to Wawel you should call at the Pauline church of Skalka, a small hillock where saint Stanislaus was slain. In case of combined trips the price is negotiated individually.
