It is hard to believe today that less than a hundred years ago Krakow was one of the most modern and powerful strongholds in Europe. It encompassed fortifications and military infrastructure of roads and traffic junctions connected to them as well as some civilian buildings. Festung Krakau, built by the Austrian occupant, was to serve as the first place to stop the expected Russian invasion. Presently, it is one of very few places (if not the only one) in Europe to be an illustration of the evolution in the 19th-century defensive architecture.
If you want to see the rest of the Krakow strongholds, be sure to reserve a lot of time as there are really plenty. Some of them are rather difficult to access, therefore an escapade around the defense architecture sites of Krakow, especially the ones away from the city centre, can be a perfect challenge for adventure lovers which will get their adrenaline pumping.
