Festung Krakau –  former Austrian Krakow strongholds

Today very few people probably remember that the royal city was heavily fortified until the First World War. In the 19th century three fortress rings were raised around the city. Luckily the forts of Krakow did not engage in war, exept for a short episode during the first Great War in 1914 when the city defended itself, shelling the approaching Russian army. Much of the fortification remains till today. Although quite run down and forgotten, some of the fortresses still show the traces of their former glory. It is worth seeing the large fort around Kosciuszko Mound or the quite unusual masterpiece of military architecture from the first half of the 19th century, the "Benedictine tower" in Krzemionki.
